wendyl I have heard through the grapevine that in the latest Matlock quiz, there is a number of mistakes:

Q48. Should be piece not pierce
Q79. Add an L to the anagram
Q94. Add an E to the anagram
Q105. Add THE to the anagram

Cheers!

wendyl How's the latest Matlock Quiz going? At this end, 110 clues have been solved wtith ideas on another 5. The remaning 5 will need very careful thought!

The clue that defied solution in the very LAST Quiz was: Q92. Take a nautical word for the wind, expressing joy and type of slightlly leavened Indian bread and stir

The answer was given as HANGAR LANE ( a fairly important junction in London)!!?

This clue was not solvable in my opinion. Firstly, it was the name of a street - rather than a town or famous building. Secondly, it has been incorrectly spelt - should be HANGER LANE (according to my A-Z).

Thirdly, it has been constructed as an anagram of the three "words" LARGE + HA + NAN. Each of these is flawed! The last word NAN is usually taken as NAAN, and HA could then have been dropped to H(ydrogen). To find HA as an expression of joy is asking a great deal!

Finally LARGE is supposed to be "a nautical word for the wind". This is simply not true. The phrase, BY and LARGE is nautical in origin and refers to the part of the wind that propels a yacht (the LARGE) and the unusable part of the wind that acts across the path of the yacht (the BY). For these reasons (taken together) there was NO CHANCE that anyone could have solved the clue to Q92.

Fortunately the latest matlock Quiz appears to be free of such problems (by and large)! Regards

Well crofter you are somewhat ahead of me with answers to this quiz
Last week I went on coach trip up to Northumberland with my gardening club armed with my quiz sheet! I think I already had nearly 100 answers, with a bit of help from my fellow passengers I managed a few more. I spent a good deal of time travelling round the coast with my atlas too. I expect I'm missing your 5-10 answers any way. I'll keep trying for the moment but may have to ask help from ABers in due course. Thanks for the info re Q92 above - agree with your comments

regards
