Americans invented the Joker. It originated around 1870 and was inscribed as the "Best Bower," the highest card in the game of Euchre. Since the game was sometimes called "Juker," it is thought that the Best Bower card might have been referred to as the "Juker card" which eventually evolved into "Joker." Other gams such as Golf - President and Trixster also use Jokers. They are also used in many other games as 'Wild Cards' counting as anything, this is interesting as two people can have the same hand, ie three aces, which makes the betting element of the game a little more exciting.

Jokers are also used in the game of Canasta, indeed they're vital to the game.

'Jokers Wild' is a classic saying regarding this card, a film and a book have both been named such! So a wild card that can be used to any value really!
