Is 'piping hot' toast a myth? By the time I have applied butter and evenly spread the marmalade, at best, the toast is warm!

Stick it on a tray and put in a hot oven for a couple of minutes, or even the air fryer.

Purely for research purposes :-)
Good grief. Can't you make toast

LOL... I want to eat it, not write a dissertation on it.

The old adage... 'A poor workman blames his tools'... I'm genuinely beginning to feel it must be my Morphy Richards.

Is that the name of your cook?
Toast should be left to cool before it is spread with whatever takes your fancy and eaten. Trying to keep it warm before eating is foolish and it also makes spreading extremely messy. Anything that melts (e.g butter) is absorbed by the toast and trying to put anything else on top of that (e.g. jam or Marmite) is a nightmare.

That's why toast racks are available.
How come you're always so cheery, paington. (lucky devil)
NJ: Available. yes, but only used by the upper classes who didn't understand toast at all because their toast was made for them by servants who had to present it at table. Toast isn't toast unless the butter runs down your arm as God intended.
Paigntonian, sorry.
The Judge knows.
Try spreading kedgeree on hot toast, Atheist.
I hadn't thought of kedgeree on toast, but it sounds interesting. Would it be difficult to do? More difficult than avocado?
Toast must be hot and buttery, for preference.
Due to my restrictive diet I haven't used any sort of fat on my toast. It is very sad.
I always make sure butter is soft and spread able before I start toasting the bread, it saves valuable seconds
Spread butter etc., on hot toast. It is supposed to enter the toast and add to the taste otherwise it is just like putting something on stale bread.
Barry - I never put butter on toast if I am using jam or marmalade only use it if having Marmite. Maybe worth a try.
There's no "supposed to" about it. I like toast both hot and left to go cold before spreading anything - you have it the way you like it.
Thanks, lady-Jane, I only have toast once a fortnight with lightly poached eggs these days but I agree dry toast is fine with jam or marmalde
I have been considering having a glass of water before bed. I am a little unsure whether I should be bold and walk to the kitchen or wait patiently for the cold water tap to come to me. And I'm a little concerned about filling a whole glass; doubtless there will be consequences for the planet.
Very few foods pipe in my experience.
