Emmie and 1ozzy got there almost at the same time, with emmie just ahead.

There aren't many 8-letter possibilities. One (horizontal) possibly fits with two Es but doesn't allow for the two Rs. The correct one is vertical and allows for both the Es and the Rs.

Worked out the puzzle without the clue and still couldn't see it . I get it now but it's a pretty vague clue.
