is the 2nd of January 2006 a national holiday? The miserable swines at my work are refusing to up the allocation to allow more people off, this leaves me with no alternative than to phone in sick. Any other way around it?

Its a Holiday - the usual arrangement is that any such occasion which falls on a weekend is granted on the following Monday. This is happening with Christmas Day/Boxing Day. CD falls on a Sunday so the following Tuesday is also a holiday.

It is a bank holiday because New Year's day is a Sunday.

Surely, they will have to pay you at bank holiday rates if they make you work?

Sorry, 2nd Jan is only a bank holiday in Scotland.
No, the 2nd is a bank holiday in the UK and RoI. However the 3rd is a bank holiday in Scotland only
The 2nd is a bank holiday because New Years Day falls on a Sunday. If a bank holiday falls at the weekend, they have to give you a week day in return. Let them know it's a bank holiday.
though of course employers are under no legal obligation to give workers bank holidays off, check your contract to see if you do have these days off, if not then unfortunately not much you can do about it... good luck

Thank you very much for your answers. I'll try the bank holiday angle but if that fails i think i might come down with a 'throat infection' over the festive period. either that or come in a do sweet fa.

As has been stated, 2nd January is a 'public holiday' but this doesn't force your employer to give you time off. Neither does it force the company to pay a higher rate. I work for a company (rail industry) where the policy on public holidays is 'normal day - normal pay'.

Stop skiving. I've only had two days off sick in the past 30 years (and I'm annoyed at myself for that). Maybe if you tried to help the company a bit more they might be a bit more flexible when you really need it.

Chris
It depends on what type of company you work for, and if a bank holiday would mean more or less work, which should then help your argument for either more pay or a holiday. If your contract is office hours 9-5 then you get the day off, simple.

in response to Chris....If the company never treated its employees like modern day sweatshop workers i may be a bit more eagre and enthusiastic about going in to work when most ordinary people have a day off. You dont know the ins and outs of my working life so please refrain from labelling me a 'Skiver'.

i work for the nhs so every day is a work day inc xmas day etc.... will one day really do you any harm????

its people like you that make others look bad!!! i am working xmas eve day, boxing day night, and new years day night... life goes on around me but i wouldnt even dream of calling in sick!!
