Wildcard?

There is a word I am trying to remember, but I know only how it begins and ends, so are there still things called wildcards which would help me "fill in" the missing letters if I was to search on Google?...I remember something like *.*, but I've tried that and... Ta Muchly and Take Care All.

Say that you couldn't remember the word "Christmas" but you could remember that it was 9 letters and began with "Ch" and ended in "as"
then type in CH?????AS and t will give you a list of words with those details.

If you can't remember the number of letters either delete one question mark and it will give you 8 letter words, delete 2 and it will give you 7 letter words, add 2 question marks and it will give you 11 letter words etc etc. Then it is just trial and error!

By heck Danny that was quick! Right, all I have is "lev at start and lid" at end, but can't remember how long the complete word is or how many missing letters.

Onelook is the one with functions like:

bl*:snow Find words that start with bl and have a meaning related to snow

on www.onelook.com you can use * as a wildcard for any number of letters, so for the above example you could use ch*as to find Christmas.

Many Thanks Both, JJ I use that site for my crosswords and though my search is more medical based, I will give it a try and Chelle, your link seems to be a bit more specific to what I'm after...which is incidentally, the name of an antibiotic!

Quite a difference between lid and cin.

Agreed and there are many antibiotics, it all depends on whether the start or end of the drug name has lodged in the memory.

I hope to flippin' heck that I haven't messed up all you good guys and that I remember it okay, but JJ's lev leads to antibios, so maybe I got the ending "lid" wrong, not surprising, seeing the state I was in, but I hope I am forgiven any errors?
