No dannyk13 it's a crossword clue quiz http://www.rainbowcharitypuzzles.co.uk/puzzle.htm
Squadron
Skimmers?
The Dambusters used bouncing bombs which skimmed over the water
So where's the silent letter?
One of the'm's ?

Question Author
Thanks, good thoughts, but nothing's ringing loud bells at the moment.
Skimmers does fit both parts of the clue.
Ducks and drakes is the old English name for the pastime of skimming flat stones on the surface of water to make them bounce as many times as possible.
Question Author
If it was skimmers with a silent m though it would be 'skimers?
Yes, I’m pretty sure Danny is correct.

My answer was based on a Squad of ducks / silent letter u / squadron being the team used to do it.
Why is this in crosswords
Question Author
Thanks dannyk and master
I'm not convinced!
jj, if you can think of another word that fits both parts of the clue I would be surprised.
Question Author
I was wondering highball which was a bouncing bomb but not actually used on a dam as far as I can see
Bouncers or skippers then
However none of these including skimmers have a silent letter

One of the dams busted was the Eder
Eder busted = Ederdown
Trying to get eiderdown!! (silent i)
How would that fit ducks and drakes?
It's good that you've got until the end of May to resolve this one!
Yes Nac - I have no idea of the answer!

The down of Eider ducks isused to make an eiderdown Danny - it doesn't have to relate to the stone skimming game!
