Abatable - all the definitions are given in Chambers
...except the crossword setter has read the definitions of ABATED not ABATABLE - oops!! Yet another booboo for the STel...

Rubbish Quizmonkey - both abated and abatable mean the same in my version of Chambers - blunted; diminished; lowered; subdued; beaten down or cut away; as the background of sculptures, etc carved in relief.

Perhaps an apology to the Sunday Telegraph for NOT getting it wrong is in order?

Er, rubbish to you, Biley. They do NOT mean the same in Chambers: there's a full stop after the abatable entry. Obviously they do not feel it necessary to give 'able to be abated' as a definition - and they trust that people know how to read their dictionary.
So I presume you have told the compiler this have you, Quizmonkey? - you obviously think he/she makes enough mistakes!! Perhaps there is not just me who doesn't know how to read a dictionary - but of course you can - you are the clever one after all. Oh but then you didn't read it right the first time either did you!
