At last!!! For the first time since I restarted (after SWMBO's ban) , I have managed to finish a puzzle. I was beginning to despair that I had lost the knack. The Bank Holiday puzzle was a real put down. I don't think I managed half of it. And (apart from 1 ac which I got straightaway) I struggled for a good while with this one. but a couple of anagrams (which I am quite good at) got me going and I have finished inside SWMBO's time limit.
Whew! And his Nibs's team won today (he felt he was out of form and might lose his place ). So all is well.

Yes it is steven
It actually comes from Rumpole of the Bailey, referring to his wife.
Question Author
I think he "borrowed " it from Haggard! But it was a good joke.
^^^ That's in modern parlance. It may be more ancient.
Your mum must have been related to my late mother, that was her name too. :-)
There's a lot of it about Wolf.
It is of the same TV vintage as Arthur Daley in Minder, who referred to his wife as " 'er indoors".
Question Author
I don't know that one.Presumably a famous character ?
Thank you all.
The late George Cole, who starred with Dennis Waterman in a series called 'Minder'. Early 80s.
