Avatars

I've noticed that some new users (including spammers) seem to have avatars on the front page as soon as they join. I also see that some existing users without avatars (eg TTT) are also displaying avatars on certain pages.
I assume AB is picking the avatar up based on the poster's email address for which he/she had previously set up an avatar on Gravatar/WordPress.
Is this deliberate or justa glitch

I'm not sure how it works either FF they did used to be a two week postponement before having an avatar, my dear friend Cupid has lost hers and she won't mind me saying not too computer savvy to re-install one. Hope it's just a glitch.
