Thanks "jackdaw 33". This was my initial thought but it was the (leader) which put me off. May well go with this if nothing better is lodged.

Perhaps the setter missed out the L. I can think of no alternative. John Smith was elected leader in 1992 after Neil Kinnock lost the election in that year.
