Many thanks everyone   my old  brain only just started this type of puzzle and so pleased to have help

I am going to get a lot of stick for this but I am sorry pega, I just do not see how being given these answers is helping you. Besides these six, you must also have had a number of others wrong which is making life difficult for yourself.

I do not know if you will listen to me but I have been doing these crosswords for more than thirty years so perhaps know a little more than my detractors.

Take 9 down - you had an answer in there which was making it impossible to get four of the clues you were asking for ie four of the six across clues fitting in with it. This might have given a suggestion (as you had completed most of the left side of the crossword) that something was amiss. Asking for confirmation that your 9 down was right would have led to your being given that answer and it is highly probable that you would then have gone on to get 11a 18a 13a and 22a and, I am sure, you would be delighted to have done so, rather than being given the answers.

Other people are happy to give you the answers you seek where I believe it is your best interests for you to be given one or two answers and then for you to see if you can get any further. If you can then brilliant, if not, then come back and ask for another. Cryptic crosswords are all about practice. I know you will get there as I did.

Ok well I will standby for flak but it will be worth it if one day, as I believe will happen soon, you complete the crossword all by yourself. That will give you immense satisfaction and you will have deserved it.

pega, don't lose heart at the somewhat sanctimonious and put-down bileyism. I refuse to believe that there is someone out there who knows the meaning of every single word in the English language! I too have been doing cryptic Xwords for over 40 yrs, and still have trouble with Times and ST EV. If you would like some help in understanding the complex trains of thought of cryptic compilers, I would suggest you acquire a copy of Chambers Crossword Dictionary (BCA 2002) and read the Introduction bit. Best of luck - see if you can solve this one ... gsge (9,4)
Biley's at it again! This person? must be the most unhelpful creature in Great Britain.I am all for helping people with their crosswords, but this sanctimonious old twerp is on a huge ego trip, so pega, don't let him put you off. You will get more confident doing crosswords with experience and you will alway's get a little help from your "friends".
