Question Author

Thank you all. I don't see it as cheating. I'm asking all my friends as well....

Surely photo number 3 can't be John Buchan - it is far too recent.

Photos 1) William Empson 3) avis50 - Thanks, I think you're right - Ian Rankin?

Plants 5) Robinson Crusoe

Pictures 4) Oliver Twist

Books 5) George Gissing New Grub Street

Anyone else?

Question Author
I knew the ian Rankin one. I also think that tobacco 5 is the Silver Box by Galsworthy. Jewelery one may be Tess but she wasn't actually terrified of them. Is sport5 delillo :underworld? Pictures 3 is Headlong by Michael Frayn. Sport 2 is Alice (which one?). Thaks for all the help. This is fun...
Sport 1 - Frank Machin, character from This Sporting Life by David Story
Sport 2  Alice in Wonderland
Question Author

thanks spin. Have got a few more: satues 1 Zeulika Dobson (should have known) Basketball is Rabbit in the Updyke books.

Newby and others, watch your spelling - I'm not fussed but the Sunday Times will be, could be the difference between first prize and fame, and losing out. Zuleika, Updike, e.e. cummings, I think.

Ewe ur kwite rite jno.wuz inna hury.

Question Author
Does MIss Smilla burn anything in her (partly) eponymous book perchance? (Can something be partly eponymous?)
Statues 5 is Ozymandius and I think Tobacco 2 may be Sherlock Holmes
Question Author
phoenyx - I don't think it's Sherlock Holmes. It sounds detectivy though. What one's are you looking for. Maybe I can help?
Thought it might be Raffles if not Holmes. Also wondered if Jewellery 1 might be Trollop'e's Eustace Diamonds. Death 3 is Busamn's honeymoon by Sayers. Still have loads to do but will keep chipping away!
Typo! Busman's Holiday!
Question Author
We are thinking on the same lines. I looked up Raffles -but he smoked Sullivan's. Are you sure about Busmans holiday: death by emu? I thought it was Rollo in The Half - Skinned Steer by Proulx. What about Biggles for the sobranie one - he always had a fag in his mouth when he was going to give the Hun a good seeing to?
Sorry I meant Death 1 was Busman's Holiday! Sobranie sound rather exotic and too foreign for Biggles. Wondered if Death 2 was Miss Haversham.
It's been a long day! Busman's Honeymoon NOT Holiday!
