could it be something like

make ones case

although I am not too happy with the first word

How about: Drop one's case?
Lays Ones Case
Could it be Rest One's Case
REST ONE'S CASE sounds best and fits the cryptic part - but surely not the definition? Can't think what else it can be though...
'Rest one's case' fits both elements perfectly satisfactorily, it seems to me.
To 'stop making excuses'??? Since when did to 'rest one's case' mean that?
The people most noted - for obvious reasons - for using the words: "I rest my case" are lawyers. Usually, they have been presenting evidence on behalf of a client in an effort to excuse him/her of any guilt for the crime being considered. Clearly, then, when the lawyer stops making the excuses he hopes will exonerate the person in the dock, he has reached the point at which it makes sense to say: "I rest my case." QED
