Read it in pieces: (i) gold, (ii) fakes distributed around, (iii) desert.
To desert someone can be to forsake them. Or is French for gold anagram of or and fakes =forsake

Many thanks to you all, I had been reading it as desert (with sand)!!
It's not an anagram of OR and FAKES - it's OR inside an anagram of FAKES.
