i dont think its anything to do with grand national. It has 30 fences, 40 runners. I cant c what 26M mightb. Mounts? But there r 40!

Well, jp, I have been researching this one for days on your behalf. The only thing I have come up with so far is - 26 = Men in the Gorky novel - full title, "Twenty Six Men and a Girl".
