Acer aspire shutting down within 1 second of pressing power button

I have an acer aspire 6930 which has its blue power light lit whether using the battery or ac only.When i try to switch it on there is for about a second a noise like the discs moving and it shuts straight back off.As this lasts for only a second there are no other noises or anything happening to indicate what the problem may be such as fan noises etc.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Could be a faulty power supply. try pulling the battery out and seeing if there is any sign of life at all when it's just on AC power.
