for around 12 days now i have been experiencing awful dizzy spells with nausea, going from a horizontal to vertical position and vice versa is the worst, but feeling generally horrid altogether. my doctor gave me prochlorperazine but taking them seems to make me feel worse. any ideas if labrinthitis is the correct diagnosis or how long these symptoms will last?? this is the most debilitating thing i've ever experienced...

can only say from my experience of vertigo, that no medication works, however you can do exercises that the doctor can give you to help with it. If it persists ask to be referred to Ear Nose and Throat specialist as they are the ones who can really help. One thing i can advise is when getting up from bed, or out of a chair is to do it very slowly, take your time, because rushing either makes it much worse.
Who diagnosed you with labrinthitis? if it was a GP he/she could be wrong, get ENT people to take a look.

my gp diagnosed me, and did say that labrinthitis would normally have started to get better now, but still gave me the drugs for it! i guess he's never been the most consciencious of doctors...
Two things come to mind:

1) acute labyrinthitis
2) Benign Paroxysmal Positional Nystagmus...BPPN

The latter seems more likely a correct diagnosis.

I assume that you have no deafness in either ear and you have not any underlying medical condition and not taking any medication.

This condition should be resolving after 12 days and the stemetil that you have been given is the correct treatment....5 mgms three times a day.

Try, if possible to either avoid the movements that bring it on, or if that is impractical, then perform the's movements slowly and deliberately.

Keep us informed.

hi sqad, that's great thanks... i'll stick with the medication and let you know. i assume if it carries on for more than 12 days then it may be something else?
Well.........might be something else......but my money goes on BPPN.
I suffer with something similar and my doctor said it was BPPV. Is that the same thing as BPPN sqad?
Kath...yes......I have always referred to it as BPPN but you are correct it should be BPPV ;-)
I was also prescribed prochlorperazine for nausea,(afraid I did not find it too effective) and later betahistine to relieve the pressure on my ear, this did help me. Exercises from SOLWAY HEALTHCARE LTD. were a great help. (Can find on the computer) good luck it is such a debilitating condition.
I had an initial diagnosis of labyrinthitis. Further investigation at ENT dept. and diagnosis changed to Meniere's Syndrome. That was about 12 years ago and it still causes problems.
I was diagnosed with BPPV a couple of months ago. Only had one episode but the most awful feeling ever. Couldn't get out of bed, vomitting every time I moved my head. Was prescribed Buccastem (prochlorpeazine) 6mg twice a day. Symptoms eventually eased but didn't feel right for over 2 weeks.

I have menieres disease and I am on 3 x 16 mgs of stenocil every day. I was taking these attacks at 2 or 3 times a month. Thank God now, my last attack was in June. I very much believe in this medication. You are right it is very debilitating in every way.
