Emile Ford and the Checkmates seems fine (assuming the Checkmates were all male).
I thought they were a late 50s band but under that name all their hits were inthe 60s

"Man-ford-man" fits the "front and back of car" clue though but the word play wouldn't satisfy the cryptic crossword fans
