are there any good books on the market to help solve these types of clue
^^ Literally 'horn of plenty'...
I think the key is practise.
Anagrams are usually signposted by words such as 'confused' , 'mixed up' etc
^ the key is TO practise
There's some good info online about solving cryptics if you google, sorry i don't know them well enough to recommend any
Don Manley's is one of the best.
His book, I meant: Chambers Crossword Manual.
to start i always recommend completing crosswords which have cryptic AND straight clues and looking at both sets of clues for practise! eg mail on sat's big 'un!

there was also a programme on bbc4 which went through the main types of clues:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00fh2bh

you just need to remember the answer will be a definition shown at the beginning or end of the clue and 'build up' the answer from all of the parts!

cath x
Go on then, I'll count that as an acknoledgement at 11.51.
Another tip - look at some solutions and work back to the cryptic clues
