Along with the rioting, killings, fires, and looting that also recently took place, why do the media constantly harp on about London being the best city in the world?
Can London be made safe, in time for when it goes on display to the rest of the world, at next years Olympics Games?

Does the media constantly harp on about London being the best city in the world? Can you give some examples?
London is on display to the rest of the world a lot anyway, as it already attracts millions of tourists. No city anywhere can be made entirely safe. I think London is no more or less safe than it was the day it was awarded the Games, ironically the day before the attacks of 7 July 2005

To be honest I've never really liked London, it's a bit too fast and unwelcoming for me (from the times I've been there), nobody seems to have much time for each other. Barcelona's the place for me.
But I'm guessing you asked that question as a rhetorical one to get onto the story. It's another sad event and it's more than likely gang related, you get these in any major cities and considering the population of London is around 10 million, unfortunately, it is going to happen, as I've said in a post a while ago, I think the population impacts the required "nasty bah-stad" scale (i.e. it takes more extreme actions to be considered the "baddest" because there's more people to push it).
The only way I could envisage an end to these gang conflicts is to try and get them to mingle in some way, sounds so simple but I'm guessing it's easier for a member to attack a faceless member of another gang, once they know the person, maybe have things in common and like the person, it would be more difficult to attack them. But that's just my assumption, I think the only people who could ever give a valid answer are those who have first hand experience of what makes gangs tick.

eight teens according to the news just now. Don't you think that people, including children, teens get murdered elsewhere. London is a great city, it's only some of the people who inhabit it, that make it difficult, though no goverment so far has come up with any solution to the riots, the cause, we know the effect. Other than to jail them, which isn't exactly addressing the gange problems here, and that as others say has been going on many a long day.

the population is nearer 7 million, but guess that you have to take into account the ones who don't show up on the radar. London has a lot to offer, not just tourist sights, but great music venues, for all ages, and theatres, cinemas, and entertainment in general. Add in it is for what its worth it's the financial heart of Britain, and does lead the world in finance.
Gang culture is not peculiar to London – it is endemic in most capital cities in the world .

Every major capital city in the world has the same problems you mention. It is a fact of their hugeness not that they are unsafe.
It's vibrancy and eclectic mix is a result of our past empire and our willingness to be influenced and exited by new things from places under British rule. The result is a vary varied city.

London is a HUGE place, probably 40 miles from west to east, and about 35 miles from North to South.
The people in South London are nearer to Brighton on the south coast than they are to the north of London. And it is probably easier for them to get to Brighton than North London.
So it is hard to think of London as one single entitly.
Millions of people who visit central London as tourists would probably never go to the inner city suburbs like Peckham, Tottenham and the other areas affected by the rioting and looting.
So what makes London a great city is all the things to see and do in the centre, not the things in the run down, crime ridden inner city suburbs.

VHG don't wish to rain on your parade, big it certainly is, but it doesn't take that long to go from north to south London, as to Del Boy country Peckham it isn't that far away, though i doubt the tourists would venture out that way, why would they. They do however go to places like Notting Hill Gate to get to Portobello road market, and when the carnival is on, come to think of it, that's soon, oooh noooo
Berti, that's an excellent point about the pressure of gang leaders on the vulnerable youngsters, it's not just about pull factors to joining a gang, it's the destruction of any push factors, it's hard to say no to someone who wants something from you and doesn't care how they get it. If you look at the full picture, you get to understand the complexity of the problem, and as outsiders we're probably only scratching the surface.
Name a better city in Britain. Most "cities" in Britain are small with one central point. London is as diverse as any city in the world as a cultural, entertainment, liesure and sporting city I think only New York and possibly Tokyp can rival it. In each of those catogories it can probably be beaten bit collectivly not.
As for Britain most of the boroughs of London contain more than any other city in Britain, the expection is Birmingham.
