Do you mean Richmal Crompton, author of the Just William stories? The only vague connection I can make is "Oor Wullie", a Scottish comic trip.

Thanks but the clue definitely says Reginald Crompton.
In the early 1900s R Crompton is credited with writing to film scripts about a character called 'Nipper' which was also a UK comic title. Can't see anything else.

two film scripts
Hi scotman, I also found that reference, and there was definitely a comic called Nipper, but that is 6 letters. Maybe a mistake with the no of letters?
Question Author
Thank you all. The only Reginald Crompton I can find seems to have been an opera singer.
