it could be instrumental in lifting plunder 4 t?o? - i was thinking took or tool but can't see where instrumental or other words in clue for that matter fit in

Tool is an instrument.............it is loot (plunder) backwards.
(and instrument is a synonym for tool)

thanks for answers. i must admit i was thinking instrumental as in a music sense and also thinking of sth to do with lifting . never heard of an obol before now. just googled it and apparently its a silver coin from ancient greece - cheers everybody
