Does anyone have any thoughts about this please? With the greatest of respect to Oldred, who gave the answer as 'weir' - this does not seem to fit the clue. A weir is a barrier to alter flow patterns but as far as I know does not have anything to do with catching fish. I am prepared to stand corrected!

According to Chambers: a dam across a river; a fence of stakes set in a stream for catching fish
If you google the word weir it means stakes for catching fish, or altering flows. Oldred is usually right!

My thanks to everyone - you clearly know more about this than I do! I have fished regularly from a weir and am glad I didn't know about the stakes. Apologies to Oldred for even doubting his answer!
Absolutely no problem Elspeth.
