A man went into a ten storey hotel and took the lift from the ground floor to the tenth floor. Nobody else got into, or left the lift, until the man got to the top floor. However the lift stopped at each floor, even though he didn't ask it to. What was happening ?

I wondered whether the lift was set to stop on each floor, being the Jewish Sabbath when no machinery could be operated by Orthodox Jews.

He had a bet with his friend. His friend said he could beat the lift up the stairs . The friend then pressed the lift button on every floor to slow it up so he could win the race.

No-one got in or out, does that mean there was a lift attendant who stopped the lift at each floor?

The answer was a hotel in Tel Aviv catering for Orthodox Jews, who were not allowed to operate machinery on the Sabbath. Sorry I've not responded earlier, been away; not, I must point out, as my wife suggests I should have been "Put away years ago"
