Thanks to the 4 of you - I agree 'Rankles' should be the answer but I'm pretty sure the 'O' is correct:
6d. Prepared a scheme - for winning a game of tennis? (3,4)
S-T ???N - I've put 'set down' and can't think of anything else - I'm sure the other letters are correct.
set pLan
Set down looks OK - if you are a set down, then the other person is winning.
set plan - You plan(scheme) to win a set (a game in tennis)

Brilliant squarebear - that's one I would never have thought of. So the 'L' lets me put 'rankles' in 12a. All finished now - many thanks everyone.
