Gomorrah ???
Question Author
Sorry, doesn't fit!
It was only a suggestion in case the E is wrong.
I don't get the Giraudoux connection and can't be bothered to google it, but 'bad moods' suggests an anagram of Sodom, so you would be well advised to go with with bibblebub and settle for Gomorrah.
I have just realised that 'bad moods' = Sodom and Giraudoux wrote "Sodom and Gomorrah" so I reckon the E must be wrong.

The problem is that the "E" comes from the answer to

Improbable as Gray's stories, mostly (8)

which is surely "Unlikely".
Giraudoux play Sodom and Gommorrah 1943
Have to agree - Gomorrah it is.
The E is correct
Question Author
Ah right! It is the french spelling of gomorrah! I didn't know there was such a thing.

Thank you chaps. Got there in the end!
French title is 'Sodeme et GOMORRHE'
What would the letters be if gomorrah were correct?
ahhh those sneaky frenchies, thank goodness you've settled that

Thanks for the help!
Thank you for putting us all out of our misery!
Question Author
Of course the clue is inconsistent, and I think rather unfair, since it involves an anagram of the English Sodom (not the french Sodeme).
Unless I am mistaken, 21A is a French spelling as well...it needs to be to check with the French spelling at 17D.
As for Gray etc.:
