Erne - Old version (as before) of Earn (make gains)
In Chambers ern = an old spelling (Milton) of earn, so erns
Meant to add - odd letters backwards in "is in order"
Shouldn't the clue therefore have read MAKES gains?
Erns is an old word for earns = gains

Thank you all - still not sure what to put!
'is in order' backing with the odd letters rejected gives 'erns'.

Am I right?
erns is right it is the odd letters in reverse order and it means gains.
