The clued lights were entered quickly, but because of a silly mistake at 31
the anagram took longer than it should.

I think the site is not working properly as if I type in EV 932 nothing comes up
I think the search facility is just working with a long lag (this week's Listener thread took a day or two to appear in AB's search). I predict confusion this week as "historically" (i.e. as long as I've been posting to it) the EV thread is started at about 14:00. This thread's probably on page 7 by now.
Well I got back from lunch with a nice glass of Rioja and found the anagram without too much trouble. Decent puzzle I thought.
Also had trouble finding this thread. Finished at last and enjoyed it although did think I might come across an Irish saint.
Just realised not quite finished. Can I assume that the answers to the unclued lights which should prevail are the ones related to the theme?
Hi All
I sped through the grid this morning and thought I'd cracked it - the missing across answers all appeared to follow a theme word - and so did the downs until I looked at 15D. The only word which fits into my grid doesn't seem to link with any other answer. And the 14 letter word? Well, I'm blowed if I can find anything at the moment that starts remotely like my letters. Ah well, back to the drawing board. Perhaps a rest in DC will help.
Andrew G-S, in my case it was the preprandial 2 pints of Guinness that unlocked the anagram!

Teenieleek - both groups in the unclued entries are related to the theme, the winning group deciding the clashes. But I have a problem here. When I enter the group which I assume prevails, the entry in the light with the asterisked cell is no longer ambiguous, as far as I can see. Am I awarding victory to the wrong side? Or is there a word in the latest Chambers which isn't in my edition?
teenieleek, if you have understood the 14-letter word, coupled with the three word anagram, it should be clear which group prevails. You might also consider the general rulke of thumb that where possible, a completed grid should contain real words.

The second point explains why there are only two alternatives for the asterisk, rather than three. Neither hugely obscure, qwerty99, so I'd be very surprised if they weren't in your Chambers edition. They are in 2008, 2003 and my old one from the 80s
Sorry, please ignore my point about real words in the grid. It's nonsense. However, the correct resolution of the clashes does limit the asterisk alternatives to two, rather than three.
I too thought there were three alternatives for the asterisk for a while but agree that the resolution of the clashes does reduce this to two. I hadn't fully appreciated the real word position until I re-looked at the grid following turnerjmw's comment, which is quite an elegant feature of the solution.
turnerjmw, thanks but I still don't see. Before the clashes are resolved, there are indeed. two alternatives for the asterisked cell. But afterwards, surely only one. Unless it's the reptiles wot won it...
turnerjmw, mea culpa! I've just spotted the third alternative. Sackloth and ashes for me!
Of course, as one of Eve's descendants I should have known, but then I have no alternative for the asterisked cell. Obviously still missing something.
Light has dawned!!!! Went off at a tangent looking for a link with a certain board game that has its ups and downs, then explored botanical connections before coming to my senses!
Must have been the glass of zinfandel that helped.
How does the title relate to the theme(s)?
Mampara - it makes sense if you swap the capital letters.

I think it is a Spoonerism.

Connect the first two words and transpose the initial letters to get the separate groups.

Good morning Slaney.

Sorry but you weren't there when I started typing (very slowly!)

Regards K
Good morning K. - my typing is not only getting slower, but more inaccurate!

I see this week's Inquisitor is also by Charybdis.
Question Author
Thanks slaney, I hope to get around to it later today.
