Out yesterday so starting now and finding it quite hard, as opposed to most people judging by the number of requests for help!
The clue for 8dn might have a typo? Sycophants from society in Asian country (5) Is it YESMAN OR YESMEN? Should it be "Sycophant's...." LERNA seems better for 16ac.
11ac A large number applied to Sweden to engage local female assistants (10, two words, split not given) I have ??????D?YS
1dn Colleague's quiet about insect (6) I have ?????A
all help appreciated!

Thanks J, I had YESMEN but LERNA seems to be the preferred spelling over LERNE for 16ac so I thought it might be YESMAN. Thanks for psylla.
MAN (frida)Y s
I've just looked up Chambers - Lerna or Lerne - a swamp near Argos. I would go with Lerne

Thanks mathsman and Judy. I had finally got to man friday after having overhastily put girl friday in and finding it wouldn't fit!
I preferred LERNE at first but looking at wordplay London = L, nurse = N, so leaves ERE or ERA as a river - ERA is a river in Italy, can't find ERE.
