Staple - record = LP, way = East (backwards)
STEPPE [plain]

way = St.
record = E.P., back to back => ep + pe
or
way = ST
and EP and PE (EP back)?
I got STEPPE in the same way as bibblebub got it
I got STAPLE - back = past + LE = staple. Staple diet as in plain diet. You've got me thinking now I don't know which to put.
But there's nothing in the clue to suggest that an anagram of 'past' is needed and backwards it is 'tsap'.

Similarly with 'east' that boxtops suggests, backwards that is 'tsea' which also doesn't work.
So we're no further forward with what to put. We'll just have to guess and hope for the best.
Yes we are- STEPPE fits the bill perfectly.
STAPLE doesn't fit the clue
steppe - for the reason i gave earlier

But i don't have the paper and so am not bothered one way or the other.
Just worked it out the EPPE of steppe is the back to back bit. I must need a G&T.
Yes Steppe does fulfil the clue.
Yes I agree now mamyalynne.
the "back" is the record EP or LP. This is a very ambiguous clue, it seems - plain could indeed be Steppe, geographical plain, or staple, basic plain requirements eg food. I think on balance now I'd probably stay with staple because of the anagram with East (way) - although way could be ST (street), I am even more uncertain now!
This was a trick question for me! At first I thought simple (= plain) but did not put it in because clue did not fit. Then so convinced it was staple - st = way. Saw the LP backwards but still not quite right. I was thinking staple = plain as in diet. Now I have compared reasoning it has to be Steppe. Two records (EP) back to back and my original thought for way. As Chris Tarrant says it's only easy when you know the answer.
Sorry boxtops, for me STEPPE fits perfectly and I don't see a strong case for STAPLE. Yes the record back could be PL but it doesn't take account of the 'back to back' refrence. Also I can't see why the clue requires an ANAGRAM of East (it's not East backwards)
