Many thanks bibblebub, quite new to cryptics, and enjoy solving them, however 5d I can't see how to get gash - I already had the ga h, can you enlighten me please.

GASH is a cut - that's the definition part of the clue.

the subsidiary part of the clue is:
talk = GAS (synonym)
quarter hour = H (it's on eof hte four letters)
