They kept from backing their car up to the front door and making off with a few pieces of furniture.

It means reversing the car to within a few feet of the door, which enables them to put furniture in the car without being observed - they would leave a short gap between the boot and the back doors of the car, and the front door of the house from which the furniture is being taken.
