Apologies. Roman general's command accepted by a governor.
Possibly:-

command = grip (synonym)
a = a
governor = father (slang) = pa

thus a grip pa

(no need to apologise, it wasn't meant as a criticism, I was only asking in case if you didn't get any other replies)

Jumbuck thank you.
Please, I did not take it as a criticism!

I was looking at "aga" as governor, as in Aga Khan.

However, I do see command as grip.

Many thanks
Glad to help and glad that you think it's an OK answer because I wasn't 100% sure.

Most excellent, many thanks again.
I don't normally get stuck on Times crosswords. But when I get an answer that I cannot explain, it infuriates me that there is invariably no explanation! Perhaps the compiler expects all to know all!
Regards and season's greetings to you and yours.
You're welcome - usually I get the Times a few days each week but not today, and trying to do the clues in isolation feels a touch harder than doing them as part of filling in the grid.
