I'm having a few problems with this one!

2 down: Scott's right-hand man (5) E-A-S

20 down: Walpole's had diurnal use (7) ----O-S
(3rd letter is last letter of 22 across, 1st letter is 1st letter of 20 across)

20 across: It provides an approach to reading matter (7) --R-N-N
(possibly LORGNON, but if so then a really feeble clue)

22 across: White expedition leader (4) -O--

Any help gratefully accepted.

Don't know this xword but 2d might be EVANS - I'm assuming the clue isn't cryptic.
me again I think that 22a is ROSS who surveyed the White Sea in the Arctic while searching for the NW Passage.
I'm back - 20d CUSTOMS? No idea about 20a.
I'm struggling with the same clues. There's a novel by Patrick White called Voss, about a man who leads an expedition into the Australian outback. That seems to me to have better TLS credentials than Ross. 'Lorgnon' is just about the only word that fits, but then the clue would be poor even by occasional TLS standards. I've drawn a blank so far with Scott and Walpole.
2d Evans was Captain Scott's (of the Antarctic) second-in-command.
Horace Walpole, 'Lessons for the day' 1742

Thank you very much.

I'm sure EVANS is right (I was thinking of Walter Scott rather than Scott of the Antarctic).

Likewise VOSS, which I should have got and LESSONS which is a reference I didn't know.

Which only leaves LORGNON, I think, and unless I'm missing some allusion to something or other, that goes down as a very weak clue.
Robert Falcon Scott's crew included Edgar Evans, who was a right-hand man.
