Would be grateful for some explanations please. 19D Is this STEAL? If so, why? I can see the "move silently" bit, but why "as appropriate"? 21D Is this ARGO? If so, how does "remove first of freight" fit in? 24A Is this FIELD which would be "piece of land", but why "deal"?

19d. To appropriate means to steal.
21d Cargo is freight, remove C = ARGO
STEAL is correct for 19D. To appropriate someone's property is to steal it. To take to oneself as one's own; to filch. (Chambers Dictionary).

21D (C)ARGO

24A I also have FIELD as the answer, I am also confused. I can only think it is field because of fielding a question, which is to deal with it. Or fielding a cricket ball which could also mean dealing with it. Quite an odd clue which is difficult to deal with - or field!

Many thanks to all of you for those answers. Re STEAL & ARGO - should have seen those, obvious really! Re FIELD - I agree, filbertfox11, it is rather confusing. Your explanation seems to be the only one that makes any sort of sense though!
