Not too many "gifts" to get started this week, so I was a little down in the mouth! I didn't get the relevance of the quote until I looked in ODQ!

Oy, with the puns, already. I got the puzzle last night at about 7 pm my time, thanks to Big Dave, and had the quote & author & the gist of the thematic clues fairly quickly. I filled in about 3/4 of the grid, while somewhat distracted by the exciting US/Honduras World Cup qualifier and a dreadful 5-0 Stanley Cup hockey game.
Spent all morning getting the last of the annuals in the ground, so now plan to finish up EV as the afternoon thunderstorms roll in (nothing too severe this time, it seems!).

Not much N&Cing yet, but plenty of time yet.
I do not envy you, novalis, reading through scripts, I did do some "teaching" in post-grad days, but that was more overseeing undergrad experiments, certainly no marking. Annnual assessments of staff, particularly on a face-to-face when employed was quite demanding, especially when employee had to comment on my assessment of them!
As for annuals, dr b, my garden is organised to minimise planting each year. Fortunately a previous owner knew what to plant and where, so there are only a couple of months in the year where there is more than just green in there. You could say it was a stable arrangement. Excuse me that "Oy" wasn't half of a Jewish exclamation was it?

Waiting with bated breath for the European results, and then to be told again we have the "right man for the job" to solve this "global problem"!

One of my tyeam of examiners ( an ex-girlfriend from more years ago than we care to remember ) married outside the Jewish faith but has never regretted it.
Don't think I'll be able to take a long enough break next weekend to look at EV. Meetings on Wednesday and Thursday mean that I can actually get on with marking and supervision of my team rather than just reading through scripts. Just had a nice couple of glasses of red so that's no more work for today.

Excellent to hear you're relaxing, Novalis. DocHH, the speccie this week was so many crosswords ago, I can't even remember the theme! I, too will be missing next weekend, as we,re off to Spain to celebrate a chum's birthday, so unless the ST is on sale in the south of Spain, I shall be quite bereft of brain exercise.An Italian Pinot Grigio tonight here.
Hello all. Started on EV this a.m. Making slow progress but pretty certain I have the author. Theoretically, Copelander, you should find ST in Southern Spain. We can buy it here in Portugal but without most of its supplements. It declares on the front page that it is printed in Spain. It's a while since I bought it, as I object to paying three times as much for considerably less, so I can't remember if EV is in one of the parts they sell but check before you buy. Enjoy your Spanish trip. I'm 20 -30 minutes from the Spanish border/road bridge at Ayamonte, in a delightful little town called Tavira - worth a visit if you're staying around long enough
Thanks, Novalis and Christiana, sounds as if ST (and ergo EV) shouldn't be a problem, then. Novalis, I expect there may be more than 1 or 2 glasses of Rioja enjoyed, but I'll make sure one of them sends cheers to you! Christiana I think Mojacar is a very long way from the Portuguese border, so we'll have to save that for another time. Once you've got the author and quotation all should fall neatly into place, and there have already been a few crypytic hints, earlier on.......none too subtle, I might say.

Reporting in, somewhat belatedly. Working all day with a Guiding meeting tonight so not much time to N & C. Managed to populate nearly all the grid but unsure as to whether I fully understand a couple of the clues. Will look again tomorrow and then ask all you experts if I'm still unhappy.
Definitely not gardening weather here. Rain all weekend and rather chilly today. PC is also unhappy - takes 15 mins to boot up. Thinking of buying a dual or quad core - what do you think?

ringer - 15 minutes to boot up? Your PC is not unhappy, it is furiously angry, and it seems to be taking it out on you. I am not a big techie, so you may get a better answer posting this in Technology and letting Chuck Fickens et al. take a whack at it, but my understanding is that unless you're a big time gamer, or work a lot with video, processing speed is of secondary importance to RAM. So if you just do word processing, spreadsheets and web surfing, your processor probably doesn't matter much, but you should for at least 4GB of RAM. I need a new PC as well but am trying to hold out until Windows 7 is introduced as I don't want Vista only to have it become instantly obsolete. (My current PC runs XP and is getting pretty bogged down, as older machines running PC tend to do.)
Hello Everyone, Have only just had chance to even open EV (well with coffee this morning) Yes, you have all got a different EV to me! I have managed about a dozen clues, not one of which is thematic! Have got the last clues which has given me the author (I think) but tyhe only reference in my ODQ to the title's Poet means not a thing and as I havent got enough letters to make sense, I am at a loss. Even worse the hints are bye-passing me at a rate of knots...................over the shoulder I think!
Even the Speccie has me confused this week, I thought I knew what they were referring to but can't fit anything in, what on earth has 21d got to do with anything, always supposing I have it right...................... Oh, S** ** that can go over the shoulder too..................anyone do brain-transplants on the cheap?

Christiana, have been through Ayamonte en route to and from Faro airport when spending a relaxing time on Isla Canela, at the then Riu Canela, very pleasant.
Have a good break copelander, drink a rioja for me too please.
Ringer, dr b's suggestion about asking on Technology is excellent, they are quite bright over there. I have XP, but use an e-mail provider that allows me to leave them in the ether and thus do not take space on my hard drive.
Nose to the grindstone now, novalis, hope you can at least find some time to relax, or even have a quick visit to see us struggling.
Speccie, first Devadolly, 21d's task is defined in Chambers, now find the Yiddish word for that occasion, that reveals the first half, 4 letters, of the venue of the State Occasion. The second half is defined by 33d. As far as EV is concerned, I think you need to work the cryptic elements of clues that have definitions to reveal a few more superfluous letters, and squares that intersect with Thematic Clues, before concentrating on those clues. Copelander has mentioned the unsubtle hints that novalis and I made at the start of this thread. I'll have to "trot" off now to prepare dinner, it would be the last straw if this Ev went over the shoulder.
