One more question about the Spectator X-word that Greyfox attached: 16a answer is TIRE. This is OK for 'pinafore' and 'dress' (according to Shorter Oxford Dict.) but how does it fit with 'train'? Grateful for any help.

Chambers 4th definition of 'tire' is: (Spenser) a train; a tier of guns (variant of tier).

Chambers is absolutely essential if you're going to do The Spectator regularly.

Pity that those of us who live outside the UK can't win a Chambers.
Why is Chambers always the reference? When I was still in the UK (a long time ago) the OED was always the bible.

Hi - this is Timessolver. Is it all right to send in a completed print of Greyfox's download? Surely the Spectator want us to buy the newspaper?
Hi Timessolver - you can win by sending in the downloaded copy.
In their own words, The Chambers Dictionary is the most complete single-volume English dictionary available - I think this was enough to secure its place as the 'cruciverbal bible'.
