Hello EV N&Cers,
Populated the grid quite quickly, but did not locate the three proverbial recommendations in such a rapid manner. Would have been quite elegant if the 3 had appeared in the form of the first word of 5d!

Been suffering from a really bad sore throat ( not helped by presernting a quiz last night ...... but I wasn't going to let people down ) so this was just what the doctor ordered! ( The two bottles of medicine/French red I was given may make me the third of the thematic words to be highlighted!! )Agree with what you say about the elegance. It helped that we had a question on the theme ( we were given two and had to say what the third was ) in the local quiz league a couple of weeks ago.

Helo again all, Devadolly's obviously had a very good time in Harrogate if she hasn't got round to checking in with the N&C yet . DocHH, that must be all your lives used up, what with the aitches last week and Doc this week. When I worked out what 5d was, I thought I'd be ahead of the game, as that is what I am, but it didn't really help at all. Physicsgirl, just keep plugging on in there......there are better times ahead, just after she's had her 1st night's sleep.....not too long now with any luck!

After a string of complex Listeners, I was lagging behind on the EVs, but after a quick solve of this weeks Listener, I had time to catch up on 853 & 854.
One quick question, in my eyes the pre-amble for 854 is slightly ambiguous....did people shade just the 3 proverbial answers in the grid, or all 7, including the definition-less ones?

Hello Everyone - sorry I'm late, did have an excellent time in Harrogate, we identified one murderer, but not the other! Managed to populate fair bit of the grid on the way home, but (as usual) no idea about the Theme.
Was unable to do more until now as we came home to bad news which had to be dealt with.
Presume the first word in 5d to be an antonym for fib and the second word seems to reek of quackery, but the connecting letters care of 40 & 44a are perplexing me!?
Also seem to be being particularly unseeing in the NW quarter.
Novalis, you get too many colds - you need Echinacea during the winter, don't worry, it doesn't react with red wine!
Physicsgirl I should start the mini PG on red wine ASAP, that should make her sleep!

Lacking both access to Chambers and a facility with Latin, I'm somewhat stuck on the first word of 5d. Given Rollo's hint above, I believe I know the play he refers to, and given the letters I have for 5d, I can make a stab at the first word.
However I can't confirm that the Latin translation of the 2nd word of the play (call it YYYYYYY) is in fact the first 4-letter word in 5d (call it XXXX). If I am right I am more used to seeing the phrase "the XXXX of the YYYYYYY". If I am wrong, all this is drivel (which it may be in any case).
This is the first EV I have ever worked (puzzle sent courtesy of Big Dave); except for 5d I found it reasonably straightforward. I'm curious to know what the regulars think of this one's difficulty vs. an "average" EV, and also how the EV typically compares to the Spectator in terms of difficulty.

Copelander, hopefully I'll give someone else a turn this coming sunday, and what do you prescribe for a humble scientist/engineer/particle physicist to enable resurrection?
Physicsgirl, glad you completed 853 and moved to 854, perhaps you could sit miniPg on your lap and get her involved with EV. She might then decide her brain has been overworked and go to sleep!

Devadolly, pleased you had a good sleuthing weekend, and you weren't a victim. The first word of 5d, is not the antonym I think you are imagining, It is however "the essential point of a problem" and also defines a shape. The second word is as you rightly assume reeks of Quackery, although I am sure Copelander would not appreciate being called a Quack. Rollo has provided a really good hint. Once you have the first word rely on our trusty friend Chambers.
Put Christopher in front of the first word of 1ac), and 1d is an alternative word for what Copelander might write, that might help, in the NW.

That was what I had assumed, but having tripped up twice this year at the final hurdle (I failed to highlight an E in the hedge of Fields of Action; and my Stonehouse insertion was written right to left, but not upside down!), didn't want to make a stupid error with this one.
Dr B, I can't comment on the Spectator as have never attempted one....as for EV comparison I would say this was the easiest of the year (Had three quarters of the grid filled in about half an hour whilst sat waiting in my car, v uncommon for me!). However my sample of EV's only runs to 11 as this is my first year of completing the EV and Listener puzzles.

I'd say that this and the Speccie are on a par, on a weekly basis, sometimes one is more difficult than the other, in terms of the grid entries, but I'd suspect EV is frequently more difficult in the subsidiary/enigmatic part of the puzzle. It would not surprise me if both crosswords had the same compilers, perhaps at times under different names. However Mynot does go by the same name in each, and possibly also in The Listener!
