davey b - please pardon the intrusion
good evening ladyalex - I thought it was decades too until I realised it was an anagram of setdetc
A bit of background information about the first clue:

Nigel Molesworth is the most famous pupil at St Custards, and I was always a great fan of the books.

Oops! missed that completely ,Harry.
However, I have had trouble finding dectet in any dictionary....sounds as though it should exist as in quintet etc
but i think you must be correct.
Hope you're keeping hale and hearty.
Hello BigDave. Thank you so much for the Molesworth link. I have been wondering for ages where the expression 'as any fule know' comes from and now I know.
Good evening My Lady and Sir Harry and please excuse the further intrusion davey b

Nigel was every kid's hero in my day - although his irreverence towards authority would be considered mild by today's standards.

Skool was always spelt with a k - so I guess this setter is probably from my generation.
