I cant comment on this because Im unaware of this particular incident.
The only thing I will say (and I echo what VHG said earlier) is that when youre on the front line and some drunken lunatic needs to be arrested for whatever reason, its very easy for people who have never had to carry out an arrest to look on and say, ohh, thats a bit excessive.
Believe me, some people are so intent on not being arrested that they will spit, kick, punch, etc. police officers. Having been there, I think its entirely reasonable to use force to subdue a suspect. At the end of the day, police officers want to finish their shift in one piece and as such, they often go in mob handed to arrest someone because its the safest course of action.
Im not sure what you want the police to do. In order to carry out their job, they sometimes have to use reasonable force. What is reasonable to one person is unreasonable to another. The police often have to make split second decisions. Its very easy after the event to say, they shouldnt have done that, but hindsight is 20-20 isnt it?
