s = short is
pro = for
g = bit of growth

I would say SPRIG as this refers to
(i) a young person (or shaver) and also
(ii) a small shoot (i.e. bit of growth)
Yes, seems to work well both ways. Let the question setter decide :-)
In retrospect, the reasoning put forward by squarebear is more convincing! :O)
