Who chooses the few acts that actually appear on the TV show, surely simon, louis etc can't see all those thousands that turn up?

They are seen first judges who decide whether they are good (or bad!) enough to get in front of Simon, Louis and the rest.
cheekychops is right. My friend went last year, and auditioned in front of judges, who decide whether or not you make it through to the filming with the famous judges. Interestingly enough, the person who went in front of my mate had an amazing voice (he could hear through the door) and she was turned away. An old guy who had dressed up funny and was a bit of a comedian but admitted to not being able to sing, was put through - i suppose he made good TV viewing. What it does mean tho is that some good talent may get missed in the process.

Yes Dollie, this is what I assumed, I do love all the terrible "singers" shown on TV but it's sad that really good talent can slip through the net without ever getting the chance to be seen by the people who could make their dreams come true. I just admire anyone who has the guts to go for it, good or bad.

Agree with the above, my friend got through the first round, sang for the second round, neither time did he see any of the judges!
