Hi all. This vintage laptop is playing up again, so I've taken a look back through the answers I got last time, and I looked in the start up tab, and found something there called DSLMON, so I clicked on it and it says SAGEN F@st 800-840.??
Is this a good or bad thing?
Oh, sorry, just realised I haven't said what my problem is- it's just running so slow again.
Thanks x

I think this is for your modem.

If you are using broadband you do not need a modem so you could stop this program starting.

Not sure it will save you a huge anount of memory though.
Presumably you have a Sagem router or modem. DSLMon monitors your connection - it's not essential, but it sure ain't harmful and will not slow your machine down.
The clue's in the name, I think DSLMON - it's for broadband connections
Have you:

looked at the processes on task manager?
run your antivirus/antispyware software recently?
defragged recently?
deleted your .tmp files?
given the fan a clean?

How
much space do you have left on your hard drives?
much RAM do you have?
DSLMON I would guess would be the aDSL MONitoring software, i.e. it monitors your DSL connection it is probably not needed but probably best to keep it just in case (it' one of those that is hard to say, it may just monitor, or it may actually perform a function)

VHG you do need a modem for broadband, either a standalone ,modem connected to the computer or the modem built into a router. the sagam f@st's are usb broadband modems.
hmmm only one reply when I statred... must type faster and drink less cofffee

Hi all.
Ethel, all the figures here http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Technology/Comp uters/Question572875.html
Hope you don't mind trawling through all that.
I'm thinking now that the SAGEN thing could be from when I was with Tiscali- I'm with Virgin now.
I've done all the things you suggested , apart from cleaning the fan. How do i do that then please? x

On refelction, that was lazy of me to expect folk to trail through 40+ answers!
On local disk C it says Used space 12.7GB Free space 5.84GB.
Vehelpful thinks that my machine originally had WindowsME and was upgraded to XP just before I received it x
if you now have virgin cable then no you won't need the DSLMON software, but as rojash said, it's not going to free up much getting rid of it.

The probalem is, it's very easy to answer a question on here when somebody asked something like how do I do..... but if your computer is running slow there could be so many things causing the problem and it's nearly impossible to suggest what it is.

If your laptop still has 256mb if memory in it then I would still suggest that you could really do with at least increasing that by another 256mb at least (another 512 would be better)

Windows XP will run with 256mb of memory but it struggles a little, add on top of that your virus checking software (which is normally the worst thing installed for using memory) it really starts to chug and slow down with just 256.

If the computer is slow and you can pretty much constantly hear the hard drive accessing pretty much all the time then you need more memory.

Thanks Chuck. Can I add you as a friend on FB? I won't bombard you with questions, I promise!
P.S. - how do I clean the fan? x
>WindowsME and was upgraded to XP just before I received it x

I think we decided in the end that it had Windows 2000 on it originally, based on the label on the bottom of the laptop.

Hiya helpfulguy. Think I scared Chuck off when i mentioned becoming a FB friend, heh heh.
Yep, you're right. Should've printed the answers off from last time coz me printers given up on me now!
So i've got Spybot, C Cleaner, + AVG. Is that harmful, having all 3? x
Question Author
VH- would you read your answer you gave me in earlier post at 12.20 on Thurs 29/5 please? I've tried to c+p it but can't x
Question Author
Oops- sorry VH- ignore above. We did decide later that it was Windows 2000- sorry again x
oh sorry bath, had to pop out, yes of course you can add me on FB

and cleaning the fan is sometimes a tricky one on laptops, it depend on how the fan is designed, if you look at the air vents on the bottom and can see a fan through one you can dust through the vent with a soft brush and use a vacuum cleaner to draw the dust out.

it's not normally as vital to clean the fans on laptops as much as a desktop though as they don't run all the time in a laptop so tend not to get so clogged.
Having Spybot, CCleaner and AVG won't do any harm at all.

Thanks Chuck + Ethel.
I was told that I should only need to use C Cleaner every couple of months, + defrag once a month only. Would you agree? x
doing them more often is not going to hurt anything, if you find your computer is slowing down do it every month or even every couple of weeks

I think I said every couple of months and AC said every month originally, there is not really a right or wrong with this just different opinions.

the best judge of how often to run Ccleaner and a defrag can only really be the person using the computer, run it when you feel it is starting to slow down a bit, as I said it won't hurt anything, if it take a long time then leave the computer on over night and run just before going to bed.
lol
bath .... how come you generate so many replies ... you are well on the way to 40 again .... ;-)

your best solution is to go back to 98se or 2000
unless you are doing rocket science it's more than enough for a bit of surfing e-mail 'n' stuff like that.

I really don't see that adding memory is going to do much more than lowering your savings.
It's the combination of small disc, old processor, low memory .... blah blah. (like hitting 50 - takes all night to do what you used to do all night)
I still run a 98 (virtual) machine and it's the fastest machine I run ....

XP is flashier prettier, BIGGER, HUNGRIER and more out of place(ier) and unsuitabl(ire) on your machine.

you could try throwing out all the passengers .....

right click My Computer
then from the menu take Properties
goto advanced
press Settings
tick the "Adjust for best performance" setting
(ok, ok, ok)

reboot ... see if there is a difference

right click on the desktop (where there is just empty space and no icons)
Properties
on the Themes tab - change the theme to "classic"
reboot .... see

said it once ... big wheels won't make a mini go faster.
just a waste of money
what will make you go faster .... is a faster car.
will cost more ... but will work better
if you want it to look faster ... only race old cars ... that way it's equal
now everything AC has said is correct and what he describes about how to get rid of the fancy effects is a sure fire way to improve performance, but we will have to agree to disagree on memory,

I think 256mb is the absolute bare minimum for XP and it really does struggle with that little. my XP laptop isn't a lot faster with only a 1.5ghz celeron and upping the memory from 256 made it like a new machine to use.
