Hello Cruciverbalist .. once again thanks & have a good weekend
many thanks for link
thanks for the link

took a lot of googling to finish this one but a pleasing result in the end
Belated thanks for the link, Cruciverbalist.

I'm relieved to have solved this already, knowing I won't have to spend all week pulling my hair out.

My pleasure, as always, chaps. Time now to enjoy some port with my turkey.

Solved all the clues, guys, but now I'm stuck. Is the "depressing place in Somerset" Downing Street? If so, where do we go from there?
magwitch, that sounds right - I'd been wondering what that was. Try getting some 2 word answers to the definitions which are the extra words. Then you should start to see the association. The extra words I started with are those which appear first and last in the set of across clues.
Still stuck on the last one though, which I suspect is the incomplete one.
magwitch - I think you better be careful giving away answers as the law-abiding listenerites will be on your back

spiderfreak - one of them should be 3 words rather than 2 and so that extra word goes with another example
Woops, I probably shouldn't have confirmed magwitch's suggestion either. Apologies for that - I do agree with the principle of not giving the game away.

Thanks for the hint though midazolam - I found that I had hastily overlooked a word in an answer I already had. Once I sorted that out, the other answer fell out ok.
I'm glad magwitch said it ... I thought it was all about Sad(lers) Wells. Who cares how I get the answer ... just solve it!
Why 'Yes', incidentally?
dr john, not finished yet but possibly. yes .......... ( tv comedy )
Of course, sorry, should have realised.
Thanks for the nudge, spiderFreak. Got there now!
Okay, I'm beaten and in need of an Aha! moment.

Can anyone suggest to me the relevance of "cockatoo"? Chambers tells me it's a crested parrot, a small farmer or a lookout - none of which seem to have anything to do with my grid after completing the clues.
Read the Wikipedia article on said bird. You should see something that should give you an A-ha monent with one of the unclued words in your grid. There's more than enough info on the rest of this thread to work from there (although I'm still not quite there myself with all of the associations I have to admit!)

I spent a thoroughly enjoyable Saturday afternoon solving this - my lucky break was associating the said Cockatoo. I was totally convinced of the association (given in Bradford's) and it was relatively straightforward when a second association confirmed my conviction.

Pleased that all grid entries are real words; that makes for a well-rounded puzzle in my view,
Gazco: Cheers - that was enough help to finish the rest of the puzzle.
Quite good fun if very quick to solve (though I think the cockatoo was the last association I made!) I saw the theme and finished without needing the cryptically clued location, so gave that no thought at all until reading this thread just now & see that Magwitch made the effort! Well done all who got there or who are almost there, see you next week
Could someone help be with the wordplay in 10 across? I'm sure that the answer is a country but I can't see how the rest of the clue works. Thanks a lot.
