Repel and be repelled by salt perhaps

The answer is sulphate. I can see that 'hate' means to be repelled by, but how do you get the sulp bit.

In the same crossword: Dramatist, needing work shortly, taking partners on as past peak. As it was 3,6, and Ben Jonson fits, I guessed the right answer. But how on earth the cryptic part works I can't begin to fathom. Any help on either of these much appreciated.

And = Plus ..repel ( backwards ) and hate ..(be repelled by )
May I?

Ben Jo(b)+N&S+on - 'past peak' = after Ben; Jo(b) = 'work shortly'; N & S = 'partners' (in Bridge) + 'on'
Ben is a hill or peak
Jo could be job(work shortly/shortened)
Nson could be a pun on "and son" partners

sometimes they are very obscure and you never work them out
good luck

OOh lie-in dunnit again yay

Thank you all very much. I can see I may have eventually figured out sulphate, but the Ben Jonson one seems a tad too cryptic. Both clues are from Paul in the Guardian - I shall be keeping my eye on him!
