Like u10, I'm completely stumped on this one. Finished the grid, co-ordinates etc on Saturday but have got nowhere since. Basically I don't understand the preamble. Oh well, a new one soon.
Andrew
There is a (fairly) obvious (capital) city in the grid - work up from there.

Regarding ambiguous coordinates, I agree that exam might have moved to the other end of 11 across, being the definition, but can't see how listener's or up could move right whilst still maintaining the correct wordplay - have I missed something here ?
midazolam, I could tell how many movements there were from the co-ordinates alone. I just couldn't see the words. For a long time I thought it might have something to do with the Olympics and/or Los Angeles ;-)
i see now how you did it Mr Crossy - i couldnt get the movements before the theme because i had a few coordinates wrong - as mentioned above.
It wasn't until i got the theme and the movements are self-explanatory i could work backwards and correct my mistakes

i also thought of that theme originally

Mysterons: Listener's could go to the end and the wordplay would still be in order. Also I had "up" as a synonym for the last three letters of the answer and "stylish" meaning an anagram, because i had never heard of the alternative meaning of this word.
It's fascinating how we've come to the solution of this one from various different angles. One thing you can be sure, Mango always produce a fair puzzle with a great mathematical slant. Regarding the wordplay of 1 down, grabbing usually indicates something is sandwiched (in this case SW), so listener's would be unable to shift whilst maintaining the correct wordplay.
just finished, I had a few coordinates wrong, but got there eventually by cutting out a copy of the three words and moving them as a block symmetrically, until I could see new words forming, hope this weeks doesn't take me so long
Thanks for your comments on this puzzle!
... and please pass on our thanks to the rest of the Team for a great puzzle - a sure contender for this year's AGC.
