Stuck on one clue: A large number. It's seven letters and ends in a D and the answer also includes an actual number. We think the number is either 81 or 86. For example, clue 'These were red in a song' , answer 'Balloons', number answer '99'. Hope that makes sense to someone?! Any help appreciated.

Hundred?
Question Author
Sorry, I knew I'd forgotten something. The number can only be two figures. Thanks for your suggestion though.
no number can be two digits and end in D (don't believe me? 1 - 99 go through them all). Anyway a large number, 2 figures, seven letters - Hundred = 100 (two figures, a 1 and a 0)

Thanks. Yes I realise that, but there are two answers to find. One is a word and one is a number relating to that word, eg. if the clue was 'Led the big parade' the answer could be Trombones and the numerical answer is 76. Is there any other number that relates to hundred in a phrase or anything?
Have you considered Roman numerals?
am racking my brains! why do you think the number could be 81 or 86?
Darth, I hope you didn't sit and count the numbers all the way from one to ninety nine....between that and your new camera, did you do any work at all today???

kags, basically all the numerical answers add up to 2004, and we're in dispute over one of the answers which could be either 7 or 2 (number of giants killed by tailor in Grimm tale), which leaves either 86 or 81. But I have to say that this has been done over the phone with my parents, so I'm trusting their adding up and that they've read the question to us properly! Thanks.

Ashley, thanks for the suggestion. I think as all the other answers are 'normal' numbers, this one should follow that pattern, but will definitely think on it, cheers.
kalise25 - nope
Number of giants killed by the tailor - None. The two giants killed each other. However, earlier in the story, the tailor killed some flies (seven) perhaps. Also, could you please ask the question in a more straightforward manner!
86/discard? See: www.wordsmith.org/words/eighty-six.html

Thanks for that thewillow. It's worth a go I think.
It's a bit tenuous, particulary given my previous answer regarding Grimm - which would give you 79(?) Search out the story yourself online.
