What is the origin of 'A wild goose chase' meaning a pointless or fruitless errrand, a fool's errand?

It's supposed to be from some 16th century, follow-my-leader-type steeple-chase (ie race with horses jumping over fences). See http://www.shu.ac.uk/web-admin/phrases/bulletin_bo

I now see that fences might not have been involved, though it would have been more fun if they were.
