12a is definitely hilus - Hil(t) + US

kettledrum -thanks, you are so right, it is only 7 letters. I don't do any of these xwords myself, it is good job I don't by looks of things, I wouldn't get very far would I????
Can you let us know what letters Mr E has for 18a, please?

Azed 18a is (I think) BOONIES, it is definitely BOO?IES so some of yr letters are wrong. The BOO...S being the disapproving noises.
Mephisto 25d is FARSI - the i in fairs (aka bazaars) dropping down.
yes, pjw, it's definitely boonies - another word for the boondocks, a dull provincial place.
boos round nie - an obsolete spelling of nigh = almost
